PHARMACOLOGY
Drug classification
competitive antagonist
it is a drug with an affinity for no intrinsic activity on specific receptors. It competes with agonists for occupation of specific receptors, but lacks the ability to fit optimally onto the receptors binding site thereby reducing effectof the agonist
-
partial agonist
These are ligands that bind to the agonist recognition site but trigger a response that is lower than that of a full agonist at the receptor.
Buprenorphine, butorphanol and tramadol
agonist
-drug substance that binds to a receptor inside a cell or on its surface and causes the same action as the substance that normally binds to the receptor
Heroin, Oxycodone,methadon,hydrocodone,morphine
Phamarcodynamics
This is mechanism of drug action and the relationship between drug concentration and responses in the body.It is what the drug does to the body
receptor classifications
storage receptors
These are present in nerve endings in which endegenous neuro transmittersare stored,For example Ephedrine binds to storage receptors of of noradrenaline in the terminal synapses of the sympathetic nerves thereby setting free the noradrenaline
-
-
Transmembrane receptors
enzyme receptors
These are situated on enzymes , the function of which is inhibited when a drug binds to them
-
Phamarcokinetics
this the study of the absorption , distribution, biotransformation and excretion of drugs. It is what the body does to the drug
The correct dosage of drugs and their accurate administration as prescribed are of crucial importance to obtain the best therapeutic results. The pharmacological effects of a drug are influenced by parameters such as elimination of the drug by bio transformation and / or excretion , the volume of distribution which is further influenced by factors such as patient's age or disease and bio availability , which subject to for example deficient absorption , plasma protein binding and first pass through the liver.
