post-compulsory education
education after the school-leaving age, where individuals choose to stay in education when they could have left
state schools
schools that are run, directly or indirectly, by the goverment
private schools
a school that is not run or controlled by the goverment
for private schools
parents have the right to spend their money as they wish and so should be able to spend it on a better education than others can. Parents still contribute to state education through taxis
private schools can make some place available without fees for childreen from less wealthy background
they have smaller class sizes and better resources and facilities than state schools
someone who's been in a private school has a better chance of a job than someone who did the same exam but from a state school
faith schools
schools controlled by a religious organisation
against private schools
teaching is often the same as in state schools, but theres smaller classes and individual attention so exam results better
private schools money should be spend on improving education for all
private schools are charities although they educate only a wealthy minority
private schools just ensure that higher classes pass on their privileges to their childreen
can't afford the school, it's wrong the wealthy can buy a better education
selective education
pupils are selected usually on the basis of their academic ability
comprehensive system
non-selective secondary schools accepting all childreen
specialist schools
secondary schools that specialize in one or more subjects
for comprehensives
they allow equal opportunity
there's a lot of diversity and they have a strong community spirit
children aren't labeled as failures
few people leave without qualifications
benefit working class
against comprehensives
bring down standards, brighter students have to work with less able students
not very diverse
large and impresonal and may have discipline problems
some comprehensives use streaming and setting, so they do select
