Culture talking
Existed before talking culture did. Essentially led to talking culture.
public recognition of Deaf culture is not possible without private conversation.
behaviors and artifacts both are included. for ex: American Sign Language.
Culture talking existed before the word "culture" came into play.
Deaf people would gather and talk about their beliefs, lives, interpretation of the world, their needs, their dreams.
Talking culture
anyone who has been involved in doing so, has played a part in connecting deaf people all over the world.
talking about this notion that connected people gave people a feeling of "culture."
talking about Deaf culture. Literature and research has been published.
what is culture? Can include norms, traditions, foods, music, books, language, dance, folklore, etc.
"talking culture" is relatively new, it began in the 1960s.
Talking Culture challenges
claiming to have culture meant providing facts, artifacts and history
the first artifact that was presented was ASL, but they needed more.
perhaps Deaf culture has been trying to prove that they are in fact a real culture for the past 40 years.
when explaining Deaf culture, some hearing people did not believe or accept it.
Origins of talking culture
projection of private to public had constraints.
writing was the main form of expression
writing only welcomed their personal experiences and their own lives (autobiographies)
limited the genres of writing they could publish
other forms of self expression were restrained such as art, poetry, theater, storytelling, etc.
experienced pressure to "play nice"
deaf people did not want to offend hearing people
they "told stories" or white lies as to not cause dilemma with hearing people.
at first, primarily hearing people spoke of Deaf culture
hearing people would retell Deaf stories
some deaf people did not like this, felt resentment
deaf people decide to start telling their own stories but they first had to overcome the fear of sharing their experiences.
