The onus lies with SARS to determine the amount. If no amount can be determined there will be no Gross Income.

If a taxpayer has a right to an interest free loan, the the loan has value. Therefore an amount does not have to be turned to money by the taxpayer to be an amount in Gross Income purposes. It only has to be in the form of an asset that could be turned into cash if it were sold.

The word "amount" should be given a wider meaning. The amount includes any form of property with an ascertainable monetary value, debt and rights.
