5. Plagiarism in Academic Writing
What is Plagiarism?
Taking ideas from a source without acknowledgement of the author.
Stealing intellectual property:
Intentionally (purposively).
Unintentionally (carelessly).
Stealing personal/private thoughts of authors.
Plagiarism does not allow one to develop own thoughts or voice.
Consequences - Levels of infringement:
Level 1: Minor (Resubmit work; register of plagiarism).
Level 2: Major - Confined to scope: (Cancellation of module).
Level 3: Major / Intentional - (Mark of zero/ITS record).
Degree of Plagiarism not easy to define - On a spectrum decided by Student Disciplinary Committee.
Acknowledging Sources:
Summary & citation.
OR
Quotation & citation.
Why do students plagiarize?
Time constraints due to poor planning.
Think the lecturer would not notice or care.
Unable to do the task.
Poor work ethic.
Has a tendency to cheat or plagiarize.
Don't have their own voice/critique of texts.
UJ Plagiarism Policy
When/ why Plagiarism is a criminal offence:
Plagiarism is always a criminal offence.
The act of plagiarism automatically constitutes a criminal offence.
Students may be suspended or expelled.
A conferred degree may be retracted if plagiarism is evident in a study.
Examples of Plagiarism:
Copying and pasting paragraphs from the internet without citing the source.
Not translating authors' work into your own understanding.
Not providing a list of references.
You have used someone else's idea as your own idea without giving credit.
Aspects of Plagiarism not permitted in Academic Writing:
Copying other students work.
Using other authors' work as your own.
Copying lots of information.
Not providing a list of references.
Importance of obtaining Ethical Clearance:
Consequences
Essential approval required by Ethics Committee.
Study will be invalid without approval.
Cost implications will be for nothing.
Study has not credibility.
No credit will be awarded for study.
Incite academic consequences (exclusion, suspension or expulsion).
Avoiding Plagiarism
