ORIGIN OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM
MODEL OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM
GEOCENTRIC MODEL
A geocentric theory which stated that the five planets, moon, sun, and stars revolve around the Earth.
This model was an accepted explanation of the different motions in the universe.
It places Earth at the center of the Solar System.
Mercury
Venus
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Ancient greek such as Aristotle believed that the universe was perfect and finite with the Earth at the exact center.
Proposed by Claudius Ptolemy
HELIOCENTRIC MODEL
Proposed by Nicolaus Copernicus
This model states that the sun is the center of the Solar System.
It increased mathematical elegance in accounting for observations justified the theory.
This forty-page manuscript described Copernicus' ideas about the Heliocentric hypothesis, which was based on seven general principles.
Celestial bodies do not all revolve a single point.
The center of the Earth is the center of the lunar space.
All the spheres rotate around the sun.
The distance between Earth and the Sun is an insignificant fraction of the distance from Earth and Sun to the stars.
The stars are immovable.
Earth has more than one motion.
Earth's orbital motion around the sun causes the seeming reverse in direction of the planets.
THEORIES ON THE ORIGIN OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM
NEBULAR HYPOTHESIS
Made up of fragments of rocks.
An idea that a spinning cloud of dust made of mostly light elements called
nebula
.
A Sun-like star usually takes approximately 1 million years to form,.
Helium
Hydrogen
Dust particles

PLANETESIMAL THEORY
Developed by T.C Chamberlin and F.R Moulton in the early 20th century.
This theory states that the planets were formed by the accumulation of extremely small bits of matter planetesimals that revolved around the sun.
Planetesimal
- rock-type objects formed.
They collide and collects to form new planets.
Protostar
PROTOPLANET THEORY
A hypothetical eddy in a whirling cloud of gas that becomes a planet during formation of a solar system.
