Models for the Solar System
Heliocentric Model
this model is proposed by Nicolaus Copernicus, it states that in our solar system, the sun is the center. They believed that all heavenly bodies revolve around the sun which is near in center of the Universe.
Geocentric Model
this model is proposed by Claudius Ptolemy, it states the Earth is the Center of the solar system. He believed that all heavenly bodies ( sun, moon, and the five planets revolves around Earth
Theories on the Origin of the Solar System
Protoplanet Theory
proposed by C.F von Weizsacker and modified by Gerald P. Kuiper. It has been found that rapidly rotating nebula will develop large whirlpools or vortexes at various places on the disk of nebular material. Surround materials might be collected by these Great whirlpools by gravitational attractions, thus forming protoplanet
Planetesimal and Tidal Theories
a star passed close to the sun. A huge tides raised to the surface: some of it was torn free and cross-pull from the star, was thrust into elliptical orbits around the sun. Smaller masses cooled down becoming solid bodies. As their orbits passed, the larger bodies grew by abosrbing planetesimals, thus becoming planets.
developed by T.C. Chamerlin and F.R Moulton in Early 20th Century
Nebular Hypothesis
is the idea that a spinning cloud of dust made of mostly light elements, called a nebula, flattened into a protoplanetary disk, and became a solar system consisting of a star with orbiting planets
