Components of the blood
Red blood cells
RBC have a very important function of carrying oxygen from our lungs to the body tissues in our body. They not only carry oxygen but also unload carbon dioxide in our lungs so we can breath it out. They are able to do all of this because of hemoglobin which is a protein that they contain.
White blood cells
What Is It?
White Blood Cells, also known as leukocytes, are a type of blood cell in your body and is made in the bone marrow. It white because it lacks a protein called hemoglobin, a substance in RBC.
Why Is It Important?
A white blood cell is a part of your immune system and helps fight bacteria, infection or any viruses and defend your body against diseases.
Blood Vessels
Three main kinds
Arteries ,Veins & capillaries
Arteries
-
Thick, contains muscle, elastic fibres & fibrous tissue
-
Narrow
Helps to maintain high blood pressure, prevents blood flowing backwards
Strength & elasticity to withstand pulsing of blood, prevents bursting and maintain pressure wave
Capillaries
-
Very thin, only one cell thick ( makes up veins )
-
Veins:
-
Thin, fibrous tissue, far less muscle & elastic tissue than arteries
-
Very narrow
Narrow to bring blood into close contact with body tissue, allowing diffusion
Platelets
Platelsts are little colourless cell fragments which are in the blood. They have no nucleus and are made in the bone marrow. If a blood vessel gets damaged it send out a signal so the platelets come to the wound and form a sort of clot to prevent blood loss and prevent germs from coming in the wound. It also protects the body from germs coming in.
Function of platelets:
- transportation of RBC'S, WBS's, oxygen, nutrients, hormones and waste products.
- Defense against diseases and antibodies.
Blood Clotting: When a blood vessel is damaged it sends a signal to the platelets, the platelets come to the injury and change she from round to spiny and form a type of clot. The necessity of blood clotting. Prevents excessive blood loss from the body when a blood vessel is damaged, maintain the blood pressure, prevent the entry of microorganism and forge in particles into the body.
