Misfire
failure of the cartridge to fire after the primer has been struck
Hangfire
perceptible delay in the ignition of the cartridge after the primer has been struck
Squib load
a cartridge that develops less than normal pressure when fired
Corrective action after misfire - Handgun
Pistol
Tap, Rack, Assess
Revolver
squeeze the trigger again which will cause the cylinder to turn and line-up a new round
Corrective action after Misfire - Shotgun
pump the fore-end back to eject the empty cartridge then push it forward to chamber a new cartridge
Corrective action after Misfire - Rifle

Corrective action after Misfire - Protecta shotgun
the faulty cartridge is in line with the barrel. The shotgun must be cocked once to rotate the cylinder and bring the faulty cartridge in line with the ejector rod

Tap
tap the magazine firmly at the bottom
Rack
pull the slide back and let it go. This will eject the faulty cartridge and chamber a new one

asses your target once again
