Nineteenth Century Causes of Expansion of Europe
Technology
The advance tech Europeans had allowed them to fire away and overwhelm pretty much every country and continent with their fire power, in Africa they used guns against the African spears, In China they used Ironclad steam powered ships against the Chinese wooden sail boats
If this was removed and the Europeans were on an equal playing field with the rest of the world they would either not expand at all, expand very minimally or maybe even get invaded by places such as China since now it is just a race against time seeing who can get to the advanced tech first but since Europe got lucky with their geographical location that's not going to happen
.
Population
Explorers and Missionaries
.
During the nineteenth century Europe's population increased from 200million to around 600 million.
The increase was so drastic that in 1914 1/3 of the earths population were European
Economy
Raw materials, cheap labours and new markets were all essential processes in building and growing an empire
Motivation
Since the Industrial Revolution the demand for raw materials was never ending this was motivation for the Europeans to go to those newly discovered lands and overwhelm them with their more advanced tech for said raw materials
Some of the explorers/missionaries were seeking for adventure while others for wealth and opportunity.
The Europeans Believed that them expanding and conquering for their empire was something to be proud and patriotic about
If we were to take this away then the Europeans probably wouldn't have done any expansion at all or done very minimal of it
Strategic Reasons
England had a bigger naval force than other Europeans but despite that it was small so India became important because England decided to fill their military with Indian troopers
Nationalism and National Rivalries
The European's went out to colonize any European rivalries even if their was no benefit from it other than getting rid of a possible future problem
