Lawrence Kohlberg's stages of moral development

Obedience/Punishment

This is the age range of infancy

No difference between doing the right and wrong thing and trying to avoid punishment.

No real understanding of actions and there consequences on others

Egocentric mindset and not worrying about anyone around them but themselves.

Conformity and Interpersonal Accord

Self Interest

This is the age of pre-school

Egocentric mindset

Focus shifts to rewards rather than punishment so you will do anything to receive the award even if it is deemed unhonourable as you don't care what others think yet

It occurs at School Age (Primary school)

The "Good boy/girl" level. Effort is made to secure social relations with others.

Personal Conformity is an egocentric mindset of focusing on personal outcomes and not so much effects on others.

Authority and Social Order

School age end of primary start of High school

Orientation in fixed rules and the understanding of actions and there affects causing honour and gripping the repercussions of the actions.

Starting to focus on a utilitarian mindset.

Social Contract

Mindset develops in Teenagers not just to focus on themselves but to focus on others.

Utilitarian mindset makes life better for everyone one else.

Lawfully right and morally right do not always go together. (Kant's axe and his categorical imperative.)

Universal Principles

This starts to apply in Adulthood

Mutual Benefits

Utilitarian mindset
