A thin layer of connective tissue lining the outside of the uterus
Myometrium
A thick layer of smooth muscle which constitutes most of its thickness
Endometrium
The innermost layer of the uterus referring to the space in which implantation occurs. the endometrium consists of two layers:
Basal layer: not shed during menstruation
Functional layer: shed during menstruation -> regrows from basal layer.
functional layer-> layer of simple columnar epithelium on its lumenal surface.
Ovaries
production of gametes and female sex hormones-> oestrogen and progesterone
Vagina
elimination of menstrual fluid, also forms lower layer of birth canal during parturition
Oogenesis
A) Mitosis
Starting in the second month of foetal development germ cells called oogonia (equivalent to the spermatogonia) -> undergo mitotic division to form between 6 and 7 million primary oocytes
B) Maturation
Thereafter, for the duration of foetal development various primary oocytes degenerate with roughly 2 million surviving until birth -> surviving primary oocytes then undergo a period of growth -> become surrounded by single layer of flattened follicular cells -> refered to as primordial follicle -> than enters state of suspended animation until puberty.
C) Ovarian Cycle
(i) Follicular Phase
Phase primarily situated within 1-10 days of cycle, characterised by primordial follicle undergoing a series of distinct changes:
flattened follicular cells become cubodial in shape;
primary follicle
follicular cells begin to secrete glycoprotein-> forms thin layer around oocyte;
zona pellucida
primary oocytes increase in size, cuboidal follicular cells proliferate around oocyte -> creates multi-layer sheath -> forms structure called
secondary follicle
