Respiratory system - Coggle Diagram
Respiratory system
nasal cavity
a) layer of pseudostratified epithelium (lining):
- secretes a viscous mucus that inhaled particles adhere to
- epithelial cells are ciliated -> cilia pushes embedded particulate matter into pharynx where it is swallowed and digested.
-
A specialized sensory epithelium (olfactory mucosa) located on the superior surface of the nasal cavity -> contains specialized chemoreceptors:
- detect odours in inspired air-> sensation of smell
-
Trachea
dimensions: 12cm in length, ~2.5cm in diameter
-
lined with a layer of pseudo-stratified epithelium-> secretes viscous mucus for particles to adhere to -> keeps bronchi aseptic and clear -> cillia pushes matter back up; mucociliary clearance
Functions
-
-
(c) smooth muscle layer permits the oesophagus to protrude into the trachea during swallowing -> not possible is O-ring over C-ring

Lungs
-
Alveoli
Type 1 cell
Function:
thin cells ideal for gas exhange across the membrane, structural components of the air-blood barrier
