Module 1: Matter in its Various Form.
States of Matter
Solid - Has fixed shape and volume and cannot be compressed.
Liquid - Do not have fixed shapes, fixed volume, and cannot be compressed.
Gas - do not have fixed shape and volume, and compressible.
Separation and Purification
Filtration - A process in which the solid particles are separated
Evaporation to Dryness - A process in which the soluble solid is heated up for the water to be evaporated..
Distillation - It is a process where a pure liquid is being separated from the solution
Chromatography - A method of separating two or more components that dissolve in the same solvent.
Changes in state of matter
Melting - A process where solid turns to liquid.
Vaporization- Conversion of liquid to gas.
Sublimation - Conversion of solid to liquid.
Freezing - A process where liquid changes to solid phase.
Deposition - The laying down of sediment carried by wind, flowing water, the sea or ice.
Condensation- Conversion of gas to liquid.
Measuring Physical Quantities
Mass - The amount of matter in an object.
Volume - the amount of space occupied by an object.
Temperature - the measure of hotness or coldness of matter.
Apparatus for measuring
Beaker - Used to hold liquids or solid samples.
Triple Beam Balance - Used to measure mass precisely.
Evaporating Dish - Used for evaporation process.
Graduated Cylinder - Used to measure the volumes of liquid
Erlenmeyer Flask - Used for mixing and heating liquids. Also used for other liquid processes.
Classification of Matter
Pure Substance - A form of matter that has definite composition and distinct properties.
Elements - A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler form. It is composed of atoms that have the same atomic number.
Compounds - Composed of two or more elements combined with fixed proportions.
Mixture - Combination of two or more substances in which the substances retain their distinct identities.
Heterogenous - Irregular Composition
Homogenous - Uniform Composition
Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. It is made up of particles that cannot be seen by the naked eye.
