Problem
The Department for Social Welfare stated that the number of homeless people in HK was 1,423 before the Covid-19 outbreak.
This number is expected to have increased, due increase in unemployment, financial breakdowns, problems within families, social isolation, and much more. (Langley)
Due to tighter rules aimed at combating the pandemic, charities and NGOs are finding it increasingly hard to support the increasing concerns of the homeless in Hong Kong. (Kwan)
NGOs Impact HK and Médicins San Frontiérs noticed a sharp increase in the number of street sleepers in Tsim Sha Tsui in 2020, with the numbers increasing from 35 to 55 in August, which this number is expected to have increased even more since then.
The homeless live in precarious situations, lacking proper hygiene and basic living necessities. (Kwan)
