Types of parenting styles
Authoritarian Parenting
What are the characteristics?
Focus obedience.
Use punishment instead of discipline.
Does not consider their child’s feelings.
Make the rules and enforce the consequences with little regard for a child’s opinion.
Famous for saying, “because I said so,” when a child questions the reasons behind a rule.
The effects on the kids
Becomes hostile or aggressive.
Focus on the anger they feel toward their parents.
Tend to follow rules much of the time, but their obedience comes at a price.
May grow to become good liars to avoid punishment.
Make the kids feel sorry for their mistakes.
Permissive parenting
What are the characteristics?
Don’t give out consequences very often.
Giving privileges back if a child begs or allows a child to get out of time-out early if he promises to be good.
Quite forgiving and adopt an attitude of “kids will be kids.”
Set rules, but rarely enforce them.
Often encourage children to talk about problems, but does not put much effort into discouraging poor choices or bad behavior.
Usually take on more of a friend role than a parent role.
The effect on the kids
More likely to struggle academically.
May exhibit more behavioral problems as they don’t appreciate authority and rules.
Have low self-esteem
May report a lot of sadness.
Higher risk for health problems, like obesity
Uninvolved parenting
What are the characteristics?
It may be neglectful but it’s not always intentional.
Lack of knowledge about child development.
Expecting children to raise themselves.
Simply overwhelmed with work, paying bills, and managing a household.
Tend to have little knowledge of what their children are doing.
Does not spend much time with the child.
The effects on the kids
Struggle with self-esteem issues
Exhibit frequent behavior problems and rank low in happiness.
Tend to perform poorly in school.
May not receive much guidance, nurturing, and parental attention.
Authoritative Parenting
What are the characteristics?
Explain the reasons behind the rules
Enforce rules and give consequences, but consider the child’s feelings.
Create and maintain a positive relationship with the child.
Use positive discipline strategies to reinforce good behavior, like praise and reward systems.
The effect on the kids
Good at making decisions and evaluate safety risks on their own.
Tend to be happy and successful.
