Cell structure
Cell membrane: thin layer of protein and fat. It controls what goes in and out of the cell. It is partially permeable
Cell wall: made of cellulose. It helps protect and support the cell. If the cell absorbs a lot of water and swells, the cell wall stops it from bursting. It's fully permeable
Cytoplasm: clear jelly with many substances dissolved with water in it, especially proteins. Metabolic reactions take place here
Vacuoles: contain a solution of sugars and other substances called cell sap. A full vacuole presses outwards and helps it keep in shape
Chloroplasts: they contain a green pigment called chlorophyll which absorbs energy from the sun for photosynthesis

Specialized cells
Rot hair cell: near the end of plant roots, absorbs water and mineral salts
Palisade mesophyll cells: beneath the epidermis of a leaf, photosynthesis
Red blood cells: in blood in animals, transport oxygen
Sperm and egg cells: in testes and ovaries, fuse together to form a zygote
Ciliated cells: lining the trachea and bronchi, move mucus upward
