Modern Music
1945 - ?
Jazz, Rock, Blues, Bluegrass, Gospel, Metal and more all become different genres with different sub-cultures after the second World War
More specifically, the 30s to the 50s saw the rise of Blues, Jazz and early Rock and Roll
70s hard rock (Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple), 70s Country Rock (Duane Allman, Lynyrd Skynyrd) and eventually Punk (Sex Pistols, The Ramones) were all the stars of the 1970s
:Metal Artists (Metallica, Dio Megadeth, Ozzy Osbourne) New Wavers (New Order, The Police) Early electronic music (Eurythmics and Kraftwerk), dominate most of the early 80s
Mostly grunge (Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam) and Rap (Tupac Shakur and the Notorious BIG) dominate the early 90s
Pop punk acts like Green Day, Blink 182 and Linkin Park dominate most of the charts, although dance and pop are becoming more famous than over previous years
With the easy accesibility of the internet, we get to listen to music easier than ever before. Pop is still considered to be the most popular genre right now, although the alternative scene still grows
Renaissance Era
1450-1600
Music is freed from medieval rules and becomes a great platform for componists to express their feelings and thoughts.
Several modern instruments such as the piano or the guitar are slowly being developed and become ancestors of the instruments that we know and play today
With European explorers discovering new cultures all over the world, the variety in their own music becomes noticeable

Baroque Era
1600-1750
The basso continuo is a "scaffolding" sound that is mostly played by a cello or harpsichord, giving a deep and fast sound mostly played in eighths and sixteenths
Early Baroque musicians like Monteverdi started experimentating with a new way of making polyphone music called the basso cuntinuo.

The anciest era

Ancient Rome, Greece, China, India and Mesopotamia all had musicians, even though most of their work got lost through history

One of the most famous ancient musician was philosopher Boethius, although Greeks and Romans often consider mythological gods to be the creators of music, such as Hathor
Medieval
476 1250

High Medieval Era
-People have started experimenting with polyphony
-Most of these compositions were written in Latin and were
supposed to be performed by catholic churches.
-Notable artists of I this era are Leonin and Hildegard von Bingen
Late Medieval Era
-Polyphony has more and more progression with several instruments playing different themes at at the same time.
-People have also been experimenting with new instruments and new genres such as the chanson.
-Composer Guillaume De
Machaut is considered to be the inventor of isorhythmic motets
Early Medieval
-Music has barely made any progression, although more works of this era have been found.
-Notable composers are Kassia (Byzantine) and Notker the Stammerer Frankish)
Classical Era
1750-1810

Both W.A. Mozart and J. Haydn dominated the classical era by writing and performing hundreds of pieces in a rather small time space
The classical era was a period resembling to the renaissance, but instead of progressing, the classicists wanted to reduce the polyphony and create a more symphonic, homophone experience
Romantic Era
1810-1890
.
Europe has witnessed a lot of revolutions in the 19th century which leads to the agressive and virtuoso approach to music in this era
Beethoven (becoming deaf) played a big part in the making of this new era, making both passionate ballads and fury symphonies around the beginning of the 19th century
