Stage 1: Concern
As a teacher in the classroom, we are the person who is closest to our students. So it is easy for homeroom teachers to observe and raise some concerns for certain students.
The concern can be included:
Academic problem
Social/emotion problem
Physical problem
Concern can be from:
Homeroom teachers
Single subject teachers
Other school staff
Parents
Stage 2:Gather the information about the students
Once the teacher realized that the student may have some special needs. Gathering information is the next step. Try to gather as many as you can which can be very useful for helping this child.
students information can be:
Students' learning level
Students' backgroud knowledge
Expectations at home
Expectations at school
Behaviour management at home
Behaviour management at school
Stage 3:Share and discuss the information
Once the teacher has collected enough information. The teacher can organize a meeting to share and discuss the information.
The meeting can include:
Teacher
Other teachers
Parents
School counselor
School administor
Stage 4: Discuss the strategies
When the team are having the meeting together, it is very important to focus on problem solving and discuss some practicle strategies to suppor the students
Strategies can be:
Strategies to match behaviour
Accommodation to the students in the classroom
Strategies to match the academy
Strategies to match the social/emotion skills
Stage 5: Implement and Monitor
When the strategies are decided, teachers and parents need to implement them into practice. During the whole process, monioring is so important.
Implementation should be:
Conducted by class teacher
Record data
Make sure the data is accurate and effective
Stage 6: Evaluate and Decide
After a period of time to implement the strategies, the team should meet again to evaluate that if the strategies are successful or not in the classroom. If the strategies are successful, the team can discuss how to continue. But if the strategies are not successful, a formal special education referral would be recommended.
Formal special education can be:
One on one school counselling
Professional treatment from therapist
