The Auditory Field
Causes of Changing Hearing Levels
Genetic Causes
Genes may be a factor in determining the cause of some deafness
More than 50% of born deaf babies inherited a gene mutation known to cause deafness
Nonsyndromic genes are genes that are only responsible for causing deafness not any other affect
Syndromic genes are genes that cause there to be other issues like Hunter syndrome or Usher syndrome
Acquired
Due to outside factors from genetics
May be caused by meningitis, fetal alcohol syndrome or aging, etc.
Conductive
Due to issues in the outer and middle ear
May be due to ear injury, not fully opened ear, earwax or obstruction in ear, and ear infection
It can sometimes be fixed with medicine or surgery
Sensorineural
Usually permanent and unable to be repaired
Due to issues in the inner ear and auditory nerve
Determining Hearing Level
Before Birth
Look at genetic engineering
A parent is able to see after the egg is fertilized if the baby will be deaf or have disorders
After Birth
Audiologist performs a series of tests to see what frequencies and decibels the child can hear
May go for a very long period of time without being diagnosed because of other environmental factors that make it appear the child can hear
Parental hearing status
Hearing Parents are more likely to continue more testing in order to find out the extent of hearing in their child while Deaf parents are more likely to accept it and move on
Auditory Technology
Cochlear Implants
Widely controversial
A device implanted directly into the ear/skull
The criteria has changed a lot and it is now available for infants as young as 12 months
Very expensive
Hearing Aids
Body hearing aid
A hearing aid from the school required to be worn during hours
Often no help and much hated by students
Current hearing aid
Small behind-the-ear device that is specific to the wearer
Genetic Engineering
There are roughly 400 genes for deafness but the most common one is connexin 26
There is no guarantee the child will be deaf or hearing
Testing may be done on parents to find out likelihood of deafness
Allows the parent to pick the type of hearing status of the child
