Machines - technical terms
Functions and uses of simple machines
In lifting a heavy load by applying force multiplier
Ex : A jack is used to lift a car
In changing the point of aplication of effort at convienient point
Ex : rear wheel of a cycle is rotated by applying effort on the pedal
in changing the direction of effort to a convienent direction
Ex : if a bucket full of water is lifted up from a well without the use of pulley
for gain in speed
Ex : when a pair of scissor used to cut a cloth blades move longer on cloth
Load
the resistive or opposing force to be overcome by a machine
Effort
the force applied on a machine to overcome the load
mechanical advantage
the ratio of load to effort
M.A = load / effort
velocity Ratio
the ratio of velocity of effort to velocity of load
V.R = velocity of effort / velocity of load
work input
the work done on the machine by effort
work input = work done by the effort
work output
the work done by the machine on load
work output = work done by the load
efficency
efficiency of a machine is the ratio of work done on the load by machine
efficiency = work output / work input
It has no unit
