Functions of Prejudice

Self -expressive: Prejudices can be held because they allow people to highlight certain aspects of life which they highly prize. These aspects might include basic values concerning religion, government, aesthetics, relationships etc.
Knowledge: Prejudice also allows people to organise and structure their world in ways that make sense and are relatively convenient. Prejudice allows a person to avoid dealing with individuals on an individual level thus making many social decisions quick and easy (stereotypes)
The ABC components

Cognitive component = generalisation about a group in which identical characteristics are assigned to all members of the group= stereotype
Overcoming Stereotypes

The Subtyping model: New subcategories of the stereotype are created to take into account the new information
The conversion model: suggests that the stereotype can change in response to a powerful and salient (prominent) piece of information

- Religion
Acquiring Prejudice:
- Prejudice is an attitude
- Acquire prejudice in the same way as any other attitude
- Review acquisition of attitudes
Reducing Prejudice:
The contact hypothesis-
- Essentially states that increased contact with the group you hold prejudice about will decrease prejudice towards that group
