Theory
The theory that emphasises the unique qualities of human beings, especially their freedom and potential for personal growth
Optimistic view of human nature :
- people are in control of their biological urges
- people are mostly conscious and rational, not dominated by unconscious and irrational needs and conflicts
Abraham Maslow:
In order to strive to to be our best, We are motivated by seeking to fulfil a hierarchy of needs
Once all of our needs are met, we seek self-actualisation
This motivates us to behave in a characteristic way- which determines our behaviour and consequently our personality
Hierarchy of needs
Systematic arrangement of needs, in which basic needs must be met before less basic needs are aroused
-
Higher needs levels are known as growth needs- what we need to reach our full potential (growth needs)
