Use or utility give resources value
Value means worth
Time and technology both make objects into resources
Iron ore was useless till we learnt how to extract iron from it
Discovery of fire led to invention of cooking
Invention of the wheel led to the invention of many vehicles
Types of Resources
Human resources
Human resources are humans as a resource
Humans need to be educated and taken care of for them to become a resource.
Humans are resources because of their skill and knowledge
Natural resources
Resources from nature without much modification
Air, Water, Soil, Minerals
Sometimes tools and technology are required to use a resource in the best possible way
Renewable
Can't be exhausted
Are unlimited in stock
Can be replenished very quickly and easily
Eg: water, air, sunlight
No human involvement in the formation of this
Non-renewable
Can be exhausted
Are limited in stock
Take a long time to replenish
Eg: Fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, natural gas
Human involvement is in the formation of this
Human made resources
Human made resources are the natural resources which are modified with technology
They are modified to be of some use
They are called human made as technology is made by humans
Examples is that iron ore wasn't a resource till we found out how to extract iron from it
Resources are distributed unequally over the Earth due to land, climate and altitude
These factors differ from place to place
Classification of resources
Based on development and use
Based on origin
Based on distribution
Based on stock
Potential
Resources of an unknown quantity
Actual
Resources of a known quantity
Ubiquitous
Resources available everywhere
Localised
Resources available in a particular area
Biotic
Living resources like plants
Abiotic
Non - living resources like minerals
Developed stock
Resources of a known quantity
Potential
Resources of an unknown quantity
Sustainable development
Using resources and giving them time to get renewed is called resource conservation
Balancing the need to use resources and conserving them for the future is called sustainable development
Principles of sustainable development
Respect and care for all forms of life
Improve the quality of human life
Conserve the Earth's diversity
Change attitude towards environment
Minimize the depletion of the natural resources
Enable for communities to care for their environment
