beethoven frequently build his music from tiny melodic cells called motifs
the rest of the introduction, the melody of bar 1 is repeated in sequence a 4th higher in bar 2. it is then repeated higher still to form bar 3. this rising pitch creates a feeling of anticipation. it is increased still further when another repetition - this time of only the last five notes of the motif - begins before the bar has ended. the resulting compression adds to the tension, which is released by the descending cascade of notes that completes bar 4
in main motifs notes are ascending by step step half, and going back down again, so the shape of the music is the same
