What was the impact of the Rand-lords on the lived experience of African workers?
Labour Resistance
Instead labourers worked slowly on purpose, broke the tools they were using on purpose, or pretended not to understnad the instructions of the people for whom they were working.
As labourers needed to earn money to provide for their families, and pay the hut taxes that were imposed, very few of them opted to leave their contracts.
In this way, the labourers manage d to (in some small way) resist the Chamber of mines.
Migrant laborers resisted the chamber of mines in various ways.
Who were the Rand-lords?
Mining was expensive, so the Rand-lords began selling shares in their mines in order to fund their mines.
The Randlords were the wealthiest of the mine owners on the Witwatersrand.
Eventually, all the gold mines were operated by a few large companies, such as Rand Mines, and Consolidate Gold Fields.
In 1887, these wealthy mine owners came together to form The Chamber of Mines.
What was the Chamber of Mines?
The Chamber of Mines monopolized the mining industry, meaning that all of the laborers on the Mine were paid the same wages, and that the working and living conditions were also the same. These conditions were bad in order to keep wages low.
Workers were often Migrant Labour & were forced to live in Closed Compounds on the Witwatersrand, meaning that unskilled labours did not live at home with their families for long periods of time.
The Chamber of Mines was formed in 1887 in order to look after the interest of the Randlords on the Witwatersrand.
As migrant laborers were forced to live on the Witwatersrand, they were not able to be present with their families on a daily basis.
How did the Chamber of Mines Impact on Women & Family life?
Women were therefore left to fulfill the roles that had been left by the men who were migrant laborers. This included taking care of the farms, the old and sick, as well as taking care of the children. Life was very difficult for these women.
Families were not allowed on the closed compounds, so husbands and fathers were separated from their wives and children for long periods of time.
Dissatisfaction with the chamber of mines because of their poor treatment of migrant labourers and the impact that this was having on family life eventually lead to laboureres resisting.
Women & family life suffered severely as a because of the rand-lords and the chamber of mines
Conclusion
Therefore, the randlords had a negative impact on the lived experience of African Workers. This can be seen by understanding who the Randlords and Chamber of Mines were, and then examining their impact on women and family life, and seeing how some workers resisted them.
