Types of Assessments
Formative Assessments by Shehariah
Formative assessments can be formal or informal. Grading these assessments are mainly inappropriate because the main purpose of these assessments are to inform instruction of what needs to be covered, and not necessarily used to gauge the students knowledge of the entire module. Examples of these are quizzes, exit tickets, homework, classroom discussions, and journal prompts/Do Now's.
What is it and why is it used? Formative assessments can be used during or before the learning process. It can be in the form of a pre-assessment or an ongoing assessment. It is a process that involves gathering data to inform your instruction and reach academic goals (ASCD, 2012). They provide information on where students are struggling and where extra support is needed.

Summative Assessments by Shehariah
Some examples of these are projects, tests/exams, presentations, demonstrations, and performance tasks (ASCD, 2012).
The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of the course or instructional unit. These measure student progress so this information can be relayed to the students, their parents and other school administrators/leaders. These assessments are typically graded and given at the end of the modules/courses (ASCD, 2012).
Summative and Formative Assessments can be differentiated based on your students and their baselines. :star:

Formative assessment
By Ning Liu
What: Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course. Formative assessments help teachers identify concepts that students are struggling to understand, skills they are having difficulty acquiring, or learning standards they have not yet achieved so that adjustments can be made to lessons, instructional techniques, and academic support.

Why use it:
Defined learning goals.
Increased rigor.Improved academic achievement.
Enhanced student. motivation.
Increased student engagement.
Focused and targeted feedback.
Personalized learning experiences.
Self-regulated learners.
Data-driven decisions
Examples:
Draw a concept map in class to represent their understanding of a topic. Submit one or two sentences identifying the main point of a lecture.
Turn in a research proposal for early feedback.
Diagnostic assessment
By Ning Liu
Why use it: Diagnostic Assessment is used for learning when taking action to adjust teaching, and it plays a significant role in improving learning outcomes for all students. It assesses what the learner already knows and difficulties, which is essential for learners to participate in new learning.
Examples:
Phonological awareness surveys.
Sight word lists.
Checklists and surveys for students and families to determine literacy behaviors.
Student work samples including informal writing samples.
What: A diagnostic assessment is a form of pre-assessment where teachers can evaluate students’ strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills before their instruction. With this form of assessment, teachers can plan meaningful and efficient instruction and can provide students with an individualized learning experience.
Assessments that are OF and AS learning by Shehariah
Assessments of learning are used to communicate the student's achievement to them, their parents, teachers, school administrators and other school leaders. These are normally graded. The most common forms of these assessments are summative assessments, norm-referenced assessments and criterion-referenced assessments (Kampen, 2020) . These assessments can also be formative, diagnostic and interim/benchmark assessments (Staff, 2021). Some examples can be when students make portfolios, final projects, or take exams and standardized tests.
6 Types of Assessment of Learning
Assessments as learning actively involves students in the learning process, which increases student engagement in the learning process as well (Kampen, 2020). This type of assessment teaches students critical thinking skills, problem-solving and encourages them to set attainable goals for themselves while objectively measuring their progress (Kampen, 2020).
Assessments as learning in ACTION!
Some examples of assessments as learning are ipsative assessments, self-assessments and peer assessments. Ipsative assessments compare a students first try results with their second try results, which motivates students to try again, set goals, and improve their skills. These can be portfolios, two-stage testing processes, and project based learning activities (Kampen, 2020). Self assessments and peer assessments are when students assess themselves and their classmates.

Why? It provides the basis for providing descriptive feedback for students and deciding on groupings, instructional strategies, and resources
What? Assessment for learning (AFL) is an approach to teaching and learning that creates feedback that can be used to improve students’ performance. AFL and the relationship with formative and summative assessment. Traditionally, AFL has been closely associated with formative assessment because practices such as questioning and providing feedback help in shaping student learning.
