Sedimentary Rocks - Coggle Diagram
Sedimentary Rocks
CHARACTERISTICS
-
-
-
-
Not crystalline- Soft and layered (Formed by deposition
of sediments like silica, calcium etc.
-
-
Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the accumulation or deposition of mineral or organic particles at the Earth's surface
FORMATION
The rocks are broken down by weathering & carried away by rivers, oceans, etc.
-
-
The sediments are deposited over long periods in seas, streams, etc.
Layers are added & due to their weight from above, the sediments get cemented together to form sedimentary rocks.
-
Formed by solidification of sediments of original igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic parent rocks.
-
PROCESSES INVOLVED
Compaction- In this process sediments pile up and they get squeezed by the weight of overlying layers . Sand is compacted in this way to sandstone
-
Cementation -It is the bonding together of compacted
sediments by natural materials such as calcium compounds, silica, iron, all of which have bonding properties
