Unit 1 Rational Numbers - Coggle Diagram
Unit 1 Rational Numbers
Building an understanding of integers on number line; both vertical and horizontal
Common Misconception: Miss label the neg numbers on the number line
Common Misconception: They struggle with understanding that numbers to left of zero are smaller than those to the right of zero
NEW for Grade 6: Concept of Neg numbers is brand new; in the past students only have placed + numbers on the number line
PLD 3- To reach PLD of 3 students must also be able to interpret
PLD 2- Students will only plot, compare and order rational numbers
Justifying their answer
Students interpreting the real life situation and if number will be + or -
Give student number line with numbers plotted and students need to provide explanation and reasoning to plotted numbers.
Success Starter: Jump Start Book, Pg. 109. "Is this the end?"
"Where is the Point?" pg. 24, build up to rational numbers
Physically Plotting Rational Numbers on a Number Line
Teaching Tip: We will start with plotting positive and negative numbers on the number line and then will move to include all rational numbers.
Common Misconception: Plotting mixed numbers incorrectly
Scaffold Idea: "Left is Less" ; horizontal number line- greater/less than sign and make connection to integers
Real world connection: Money; temp; above/ below sea level; arrival time
Success Starter: Desmos: Rational Numbers Card Sort
Just in Time: "Task 19b" Mind the Gap gd 3-5 pg. 146
They understanding the term absolutes value is the distance from zero on the number line
Understand the answer is always positive- ex: walking a distance from zero
Common Misconception: They get absolute value and opposites confused
NEW for Grade 6: Absolute Value
Finding the distance between two points
Idea: Human number line- allows students walk the line and see the distance from zero and the distance from different points
PLD 3- They have to apply it; they need to go beyond just understand.
They need to understand reflection
they need to be able plot the reflection on both on number line and coordinate plane. Building bridge of opposites into reflection
DE 5.3 Engage, Reviews plotting and includes opposites, discuss opportunities
BrainingCamp Task: Absolute Value
Building understanding of vertical and horizontal number line to plot points in coordinate plane
NEW for Grade 6: All 4 quadrants
Common Misconception: Students are mixing up their X&Y; especially when plotting directly on x or y axis
Prior Knowledge: students used ordered pairs to locate points in the first quadrant
Building on the vertical and horizontal number line and putting both together to plot on the coordinate plane
PLD 3- Plotting & interpreting points on the coordinate plane
