ISTHMUS - is the narrow area between the cavity and the cervix, it enlarges during pregnancy to form the lower uterine segment.

LAYERS OF THE UTERUS
MYOMETRIUM Is the bulky muscle layer responsible for forcing the baby out during delivery. located in the upper part of the uterus and is in the isthmus and cervix. it is composed of three parts, the outer longitudinal, middle oblique and inner circular.
ENDOMENTRIUM forms the lining of the ciliated epithelium (mucous membrane) on the base of connective tissue or stroma. it is constantly changing in thickness throughout the menstrual cycle.

FUNCTION
Uterus is a hollow thick walled organ in which the fertilised egg develop.
its exists to shelter the foetus during pregnancy, it prepares this each month and following pregnancy it expels the uterine content.
LOCATION
located in the pelvic cavity between the bladder and the rectum. and is continuous with the fallopian tubes at its superior end and has a narrow outlet in the cervix at its inferior end.
SIZE
in the mature nulliparous women, the uterus is approximately 6-8 cm long, 4-5cm wide and 2,5 cm in depth
