Realism
Realists believe that states always strive to exist within a system of anarchy in the international realm so that they can exercise full authority over their states without the interference of a world government
One of the primary reasons the UN is unable to intervene in the internal affairs of nations is because it is not a world government and does not have that sort of power and it lies along with the major super powers. Realists do not acknowledge bodies like these as they are incapable of fulfilling the promises for the betterment of the world.

Anarchy, is the absence of any authority superior to nation-states and capable of arbitrating their disputes and enforcing international law (Eckstein, 2021).Anarchy is important considering states do not like external interference as they like to keep their affairs within their territories as an interference can lead to problems and wars and no one can impose laws or rules on them.
Due tof these factors, even when the Maldives was attacked by terrorists in 1988, the UN was unable to assist, prompting India to step in with the consent of Maldives
Realism emphasizes the persistent role of sovereign territorial nation-states in international relations, although, it does not account for the emergence of non-state actors and violent terrorists organizations (Riley, 2008)
States should protect themselves and should not rely on others for protection which will preserve the sanctity of that particular state
Analysis- During President yameen’s rule with the imprisonment of opposition and the declaration of emergency, former president nasheed called for India to send an envoy to free the judges and political detainees however china warned against outside interference (Tiezzi,2018). Therefore relying on India to handle the internal affairs of Maldives opposing the views on realism.
However, there may be occasions when humanitarian aid is necessary, and at certain times, another state interfering in the affairs of the troubled state or country can instead help protect and save lives, but it can also be the cause of death and chaos. As a result, it is a contentious issue.
External sovereignty- The idea of not interfering within other states defined territorial boundaries and internal affairs
**Case Study (Maldives- India Relations)- Maldives and India has had a mutually beneficial relationship and good ties since the beginning, however with the change of government in 2013 the ties got weaker
AID- India has long had a political relationship with the Maldives since they play a significant role in giving economic, defense, and humanitarian assistance to the Maldives.
During President Yameen's government in 2013, India presented Maldives with several helicopters to be utilized for maritime search and rescue missions as well as weather observation. The government and people of the Maldives were outraged by India's military actions because they jeopardized the sovereignty of the Maldivian government and accused India of attempting to seize control of the Maldives.
This is one of the reasons other countries do not interfere with the internal affairs of their neighbours because it creates a lot of problems between the countries and their people who have opposing views
The presence of military vehicles and equipment on the territory of another nation compromises their sovereignty as a state or country cannot have absolute power over themselves when foreign powers are present.

Some Maldivians are still dissatisfied with India's participation in the 1988 terror assault on the Maldives. However, it is clear that without the fast assistance supplied by the Indian army and the absence of advanced military equipments and great number of soldiers from the Maldives, Maldives may not have survived; hence, it is necessary to surrender sovereignty in rare situations
The other reason India intervened is also because the safety of Maldives is important for India to maintain their status in South East Asia and also to prevent any other foreign force from intruding in the Indian Ocean.
India’s military presence and their interference during the coup d’état in 1988 has been a major topic of interest for both parties as it was one of the most notable moments in the history of Maldives where their sovereignty was compromised for the safety of the nation.
This prompted India to dispatch three gunboats and 1600 paratroopers. Casualities included 25 individuals 100 wounded
With the help of the Indian army, the terrorists were captured and taken away thus restoring the sovereignty of the nation
