Anatomy and physiology of female reproductive system
Uterus
Definition
Is a hallow thick walled, pear shaped organ. Located in the pelvic cavity between the bladder and rectum.
-
-
Ligaments hold the upper part of the uterus in suspension while the lower part is embedded in fibrous tissue.
-
Fallopian tubes
-
Anatomy and physiology
Also called uterine tubes, stretch from uterus to the overies approximately 10cm long.
-
Infundibulum the outmost portion of fallopian tube which contract close to ovary's surface during ovulation to guide the free egg.
-
Cervix
Definition
-
It is cylindrical and is about 2,5cm in diameter that leads to the vagina.
-
Where it opens into the uterine cavity at the internal cervical os and into the vagina at the external cervical os.
Anatomy and Physiology
The inner layer of the cervical canal made up of cilliated columnar epithelium with deep compound racemose glands, secret alkaline mucus.
-
-
Alkaline mucus work together with the cilia to help the sperm move from the vagina into the uterine cavity.
Ovaries
Defination
The ovaries are female pelvic reproductive organs that house the ova and are also responsible for the reproduction of sex hormones.
Anatomy and physiology
The overies are located on either side of the uterus in the true pelvis and attached to the broad ligaments.
Ovaries are approximately 4cm length and 1.5 cm thick with the size and shape of an unshelled almond.
-
The ovaries has complex structure with the protective layer, cortex and medulla.
Ovaries produce, discharge and mature the egg cell.
They are responsible for the maturation and maintenance of the secondary sex characteristics in females.
