Indigenous Housing in Australia
Urban
Public housing
Rental
Lots of discrimination made it hard to get into rental market
Poverty - what can people afford to buy/rent?
European style - not much consideration for Aboriginal culture
There are Indigenous groups that would not consider themselves living in marginalised form of housing - idea of mainstream housing
Aged care centres for Indigenous people - specific architectural type
Remote
Laverton House
Courtyard design was unsuccessful as internal focus went against cultural requirements
Example of architects not listening to the community
Goorawin Shelter
Good example - was openable to the landscape
Still not as successful or desirable as traditional shelters in town camps - these were still preferred
Tangentyere design
Good examples
Fringe settlements/town camps
In your opinion, why did the Indigenous housing research focus on remote communities instead of Indigenous housing in urban areas?
Traditionally Indigenous communities ostracised from town centres
Inadequate architectural attention to urban housing
Harder to collectively identify cultural identity in urban areas
Harder to pinopint specific areas that need attention
Dispersion and distribution
Easier to associate Indigenous people with remote communities
