Different Types of Assessments
Assessment as learning
Liwei Yu
Definition:Assessment as learning actively involves students in the learning process. It teaches critical thinking skills, problem-solving and encourages students to set achievable goals for themselves and objectively measure their progress.
An example: students's self assessments
Assessment of learning
Liwei Yu
Definition:Assessments are a way to find out what students have learned and if they’re aligning to curriculum or grade-level standards.
An example: School Standardized Tests
Assessment for learning
Liwei Yu
Definition:Assessments for learning provide you with a clear snapshot of student learning and understanding as you teach -- allowing you to adjust everything from your classroom management strategies to your lesson plans as you go.
An example: The teacher uses assessment tools, like quizlet or Kahoot! to check students' understanding in class. The teacher can adjust teaching contents and strategies from the assessments data.

Diagnostic Assessment (Amber Zhu)
Definition:
A type of assessment, which is given at the beginning of the course or the beginning of the unit/topic, is known as diagnostic assessment.
example:
Diagnostic assessments are sets of written questions (multiple choice or short answer) that assess a learner’s current knowledge base or current views on a topic/issue to be studied in the course.
Psychology
Instructor surveys students’ assumptions about the concepts that will be taught in the course (e.g. the nature of mind or behavior)
Instructor uses a set of conceptual questions to assess students understanding of fundamental concepts at the start of the course
Why use them:
to collect data on what students already know about the topic.
The goal is to get a snapshot of where students currently stand - intellectually, emotionally or ideologically -
allowing the instructor to make sound instructional choices as to how to teach the new course content and what teaching approach to use.

Performance Assessment
(Amber Zhu)
Definition
Performance assessment, also known as alternative or authentic assessment, is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.
Examples:
a student may be asked to explain historical events, generate scientific hypotheses, solve math problems, converse in a foreign language, or conduct research on an assigned topic.
Experienced raters--either teachers or other trained staff--then judge the quality of the student's work based on an agreed-upon set of criteria.
This new form of assessment is most widely used to directly assess writing ability based on text produced by students under test instructions.
WHY TRY IT?
There is a big difference between answering multiple choice questions on how to make an oral presentation and actually making an oral presentation.
More important, performance assessment can provide impetus for improving instruction, and increase students' understanding of what they need to know and be able to do.
In preparing their students to work on a performance task, teachers describe what the task entails and the standards that will be used to evaluate performance. This requires a careful description of the elements of good performance, and allows students to judge their own work as they proceed.
Because they require students to actively demonstrate what they know, performance assessments may be a more valid indicator of students' knowledge and abilities.

Formative and summative assessment(Xin)
Formative Assessment
Capture learning-in-process in order to identify gaps, misunderstanding, and evolving understanding
Allows students to practice skills or test knowledge without the pressures associated with grades
Take a variety of forms, such as informal questions, practice quizzes, one-minute papers, clearest/muddiest point exercise, Homework, quizzes, exit card, journal prompt, and classroom discussions

)
Both before and during the learning process
Summative Assessment
Evaluates student learning against some standard or benchmark
To provide evidence of the degree to which a student has mastered the knowledge, understandings, and skills of the unit
Tests, projects, demonstrations, presentations, and performance tasks

Summative assessment of learning provides teachers and students with information about the attainment of content knowledge.
