Superlative and Comparative Adjectives
Comparatives
it is used to make comparisons, and is divided into three:
Equality Comparison
It is formed with the..........the (in affirmative sentences)
It is formed with not so.........as (in negative sentences).
ex: Jenny is tall.
Jenny is as tall as Paul.
ex: Jenny is not tall.
Jenny is not so tall as Paul.
Comparison of Inferiority
comparative inferiority there is no difference if the adjective is short or long. It is formed with less.........than
ex: I spent less money than you.
to have this comparison there are some rules, one of them is when the adjective is composed of a syllable, it adds er + than
Ex: Maria is old.
Maria is older than me. .
when the adjective is composed of two or more syllables, the adjective does not change at all, we just add: more (before) and than (after)
adjectives preceded by CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant), the last letter is doubled and adds the er
Ex: big = bigger than
adjectives ending in y preceded by consonants are replaced by i and add the er : pretty = prettier than
adjectives ending in and add only r: nice = nicer than.
Superlatives
As with comparative adjectives, there are two ways to form a superlative adjective:
short adjectives: add "-est". long adjectives: use "most".
We also usually add (the) at the beginning.
Exception: The following adjectives have irregular forms:
good → the best bad → the worst far → the farthest/furthest
Comparative of Superiority
Ex:Maria is intelligent.
Maria is more intelligent than me.
