Ionic Bonding

Ion

Atom loses or gains electrons to form ions

Ions are charged particles

Ions can be positively-charged or negatively-charged

Positively-charged = cations

Negatively-charged = anions

Formation of Cations and Anions

Cations

Anions

Atoms lose electrons to form positively-charged ions to achieve noble gas configuration

Atoms gain electrons to form negatively-charged ions called anions to achieve noble gas configuration

Transferring electrons

Ionic bonds are formed between metals and non-metals

Done through the transfer of electrons from metals to non-metals

Naming of chemical symbol

Metallic element written first

Number of atoms written as a subscript to the right of atoms symbol

Subscripts are simplest set of whole numbers

No subscript '1'

If there is more than one polyatomic ion, the formula of that ion is placed within brackets

Chemical Formulae of Ionic Compounds

Constructed by balancing the charges on positive and negative ions

All positive charges must equal all the negative charges in an ionic compound
