Genetically based disorder of hyperkeratinisation of the skin. An excess formation and/or buildup of keratin is thought to cause the abrasive goose-bump texture of the skin.

Genes may play a role, the growths tend to run in some families

It is possible for one to appear on its own, multiple growths are more common.
