What were the main developments in European exploration during this period?
Caravel: It was an invention of the Portuguese. This ship was highly maneuverable, seaworthy, and cheap to build. It could be used in lots of circumstances such as carrying cargo to being a war ship to being just a fishing boat.
Astrolabe: It was an astronomical measure tool that assist sailors with calculating their latitude. It measures the altitude of the sun and prominent stars as they relate to the horizon which then allows for calculation to be made. It was invented by a Greek astronomer and mathematician.
Sextant: It could be used as the line between horizon and the stars. They could really see what the latitude was, and they even while the ship was moving up and down in the rolling seas. It also measured angles
Magnetic Compass: It was a powerful navigational tool that sailors needed to sail unchartered waters. It was developed in China.
Item that helped Europe launch their ships in the 1400s to explore areas that the had only heard rumors about.

Galleon: It was a large behemoth for the Europeans. It could serve as a cargo ship in peace time, and could be a floating fortress at times of wars.
It was developed for war and to stand attacks with help of the the ribbings and bracings in the hulls. Developed in the 16 century.
Traverse Board: Used to document the speed and direction when not all of the crew members could read or write. It was a simple and essential device.
Kemal: It consisted on a string and a piece of wood that would be used to estimate the vessels latitud. This simple tool was used to determine latitud.
Stern mounted rudder: It was developed in the 12th century. It enhanced the ship and it is still used today.
Time keeping devices: They helped maintain a schedule for the crew. This is very important when you spend weeks and weeks in the sea. But the could also be used to calculate the speed of the ship. These were simple hourglasses before the near end of the middle ages, when the changed to mechanical clocks.
All these items helped make the Age of exploration possible for Europe. Without them Europe may not have been able to embark on the transatlantic voyages as safely as they did or made their way east by navigating around the Cape of Good Hope at the sounthern tip of Africa.
