Keeping Children Safe in Education 2021
Statutory Guidance
Schools and colleges in England must have regard to it when carrying out their duties to
safeguard and promote the welfare of children.
Includes everyone under 18
:warning:
“must” is used when the person in question is legally required to do something
“should” when the advice set out should be followed unless there is good reason not to.
We have safeguarding updates delivered as compulsory attendance staff training - where staff are offsite or part-time they ar3e still required to attend.
We have My Concern & a safeguarding team rather than just a couple of people - these people all have a bee pin
Students also know they can go to any member of the "bee" safe team if they have a concern and to a member of staff with a cloud pin for mental health concerns (sign-posting).
179 Gov. body of maintained schools

Section one
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined for the purposes of
this guidance as:
• protecting children from maltreatment;
• preventing the impairment of children’s mental and physical health or
development;
• ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of
safe and effective care; and
• taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.
"child-centred approach" = best interests of the child
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility.
The Teachers’ Standards 2012 state that teachers should safeguard children’s wellbeing and maintain public trust in the teaching profession as part of their professional duties.5
Staff should never tell a child they won't tell anyone what they disclose
This section gives definitions of types of abuse and exploitation (annex B goes into further detail)
Staff need to be aware that the perpetrator of a crime can still be a victim of abuse even if it appears they have consented eg. county lines (34) Annex B contains further info on CCE and CSE
Whilst all staff should speak to the designated safeguarding lead (or deputy) with regard to any concerns about female genital mutilation (FGM), there is a specific
legal duty on teachers.
(40)
Peer on peer abuse can also happen (49)
Concerns about DPA 2018 and UK GDPR
must not
stand in the way of safeguarding and CP (60)
Other Notes
When a child/YP transitions between settings CP files should be shared with the new setting's DSL and SENCO (112)
Online safety - MFS have run parent sessions.
The Department believes that the adoption of a ‘no contact’ policy at a school or college can leave staff unable to fully support and protect their pupils and students. It encourages headteachers, principals, governing bodies, and proprietors to adopt sensible policies, which allow and support their staff to make appropriate physical contact. The decision on whether or not to use reasonable force to control or restrain a child is down to the professional judgement of the staff concerned within the context of the law and should always depend on individual circumstances..
When using reasonable force in response to risks presented by incidents involving children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), mental health or with medical conditions, schools and colleges should in considering the risks carefully recognise the additional vulnerability of these groups. They should also consider their 38 www.legislation.gov.uk 39 duties under the Equality Act 201039 in relation to making reasonable adjustments, nondiscrimination and their Public Sector Equality Duty.40 By planning positive and proactive behaviour support, for instance through drawing up individual behaviour plans for more vulnerable children, and agreeing them with parents and carers, schools and colleges can reduce the occurrence of challenging behaviour and the need to use reasonable force.
Governing bodies shoukd recognise
and reflect in policies and procedures
that some children are
potentially
at greater risk of harm
