How far was Hitler's foreign policy to blame for the outbreak of war in 1939?
Spanish civil war
war in Spain between fascist army and republican government
Franco won the war in 1939 because of Italy and Germany's help
Hilter did this to test his new air force and perfecting dive-bombing techniques before a full-scale European war
he helped Franco because he wanted to eliminate Communism too in Europe
Hilter also used this to persuade Mussolini to leave Britain and France and join him
Germany and Italy helped the facicsts and USSR helped republicans, Britain and France also sent volunteers to the republican side
this distracted people from what he was actually doing
the Rhineland
in Match 1936 Germany invaded the Rhineland, Hitler predicted France and Britain wouldn't do anything
Britain's leaders thought that it was understandable and reasonable for Germany to remilitarise Rhineland since they believed it was part of Germany
Hitler made many promises including a non-agression pact
France leaders were going through an election and nobody wanted the responsibilty of making France go to war, they would also not do anythign without Britain's support
the union with Austria (Anschluss)
1934 Hitler tries to attempt Anschluss but Mussolini stop him
in 1938 Germany and Italy had become closer and Mussolini announced he wouldn't stop Hitler
Schuschenigg wants to hold a plebiscite but Hitler opposes
on 10 April he holds his own plebiscite which gave a majority in favour of Anschluss
in March Hitler sends troops to ensure the vote happens without trouble
Austria was immidiately put in the German Reich
Hitler had armed forces and France and Britain hadn't rearmed enough to be able to defeat Hitler if war was decleared. They didn't want to threat peace.
Britain so Anschluss was a fair demand in turning the harsh terms of the treaty
Sudenteland
Germany wanted the Sudetenland to be part of Germany because he wanted to unite Germany speaking people and it was a fortified area with Germany
Hitler began to threat Czechs with war if they didn't agree to his demands
Chamberlain met Hitler on 15th September and told him he only wanted small parts and after voting
the leader of Sudeten Nazis demanded unification
in 19th September Britain and France tell the Czechs the plan
in 21 September Hitler increases his demands and wants all Sudenteland
Chamberlain first refuses and gets ready for war
Mussolini aranges meeting in 29 September at Munich where Britain, German, France and Italy all decide to give in afraid of war
joint declaration was published 30 September and USSR and Czech hadn't even been consulted in all this
the Saar Plebiscite
in 1935 the inhabitants from Saar voted to go back to Germany after a campaign by Nazi supporters in the Saar
the Saar was the first step to war, it didn't go against the Treaty of Versailles and was a fair vote, it validated the Nazi regime and future claims to try and unite other German speakers
the Treaty of Versailles had put the Saar which had coalfields, factories and railways stations under the League's control for 15 years
