Romantic/Idealised Love
Marriage should be based on true love and it offers safety. True love should not be based on class or economic jointure but someone who you could stay with tell the end of the world or even death. Love also conquers time, which Gatsby thinks he can do, to rewind the clock and become happy with Daisy, however, whilst love conquers time, it doesn't stop time moving forwards.
Context
This was written in his book of sonnets which were all addressed to either the dark lady or the fair youth.
This poem was addressed to the fair youth, potentially to give love advice to young males.
-
Shakespeare's marriage to Anne Hathaway was all because Shakespeare got Anne pregnant and not for true love.
Marriage
Shakespeare presents the perfect marriage which everyone should strive to have. Marriage should be based on true love and it offers safety. True love should not be based on class or economic jointure but someone who you could stay with tell the end of the world or even death.
However, in Gatsby, marriage is based on class and wealth and even if you marry into the elite, you will never be socially accepted into their society.
