What qualities must a doctor possess in order to deliver the best quality of care?
respect
respecting the choices/ lifestyle of patients, whilst trying to guide them on how to improve it in order to benefit their health
respecting every member of staff at the hospital builds good relationships, allowing the best quality of care as patients often require treatment from many specialist areas of medicine, and so information can be passed on more easily
humility - being able to ask for assistance when you feel out of your depth from a more experienced healthcare practitioner is perfectly fine, and ensure the patient's treatment is best for them
good social skills
being friendly and welcoming, as well as being able to build small talk before a meeting with patients can make them feel comfortable and help build a rapport with them, optimising the information gained by the doctor
building strong relationships with other healthcare professionals, ranging from nurses to dieticians, will make teamwork on cases (for example during a ward round) much more successful
good communication
especially when breaking bad news, key qualities such as empathy and compassion will help the patient adjust to the difficult diagnosis
bad communication throughout the different aspects of a hospital can be detrimental to patient care, for example appointments could be made at the wrong time
explaining in a way that the patient can fully understand their diagnosis can help remove any stigma or anxiety they had about it
organised
being organised throughout the day saves time, allowing the doctor to see more patients for longer, instead of wasting time between meetings doing things such as organising paperwork or looking for notes
patients are more confident in a HCP who is self-assured and not visibly uneasy/ confused
empathy and understanding
completely understanding the patients thoughts will help you to build the best treatment plan specialised for them
being a good listener will help the patient feel comfortable discussing everything with you, even the things they are embarrassed or feel silly talking about
knowing all of the possible information allows you to make the most accurate diagnosis/ treatment plan for their needs
thirst for knowledge and passion for medicine
medicine is a rapidly evolving subject, so HCPs must be prepared fthings like treatment or surgery techniques to change constantly
patients will be able to detect your love for what you do, giving them confidence in your judgment
