Pedagogy
Definition
The word pedagogy comes from the ancient Greek "paidagōgos = leader of children"
Pedagogy is the theory, method and philosophy of teaching (of children)
There are 4 essential learning theories:
a) behaviourism
b) liberationism
c) constructivism
d) connectivism
constructivism
C) Social Constructivism
An approach to pedagogy that explores whether students chatting in the class might actually be learning more
Championed by Lev Vygotsky
children learn best when talking among themselves to solve the problems
learning take place externally when problems are solved together in groups and through the resulting conversations
social interaction could be a key component in the learning experience
constructivism work best when time is set aside for students to discuss the topic with each other and with the teacher
advanced students can solidify their understanding while slow learners can catch up with them
cognitive constructivism
Jean Piaget believed that students' capacity for learning increased as their academic ability grew
B) Liberationism
Proposed by Paulo Freire
Opposed to the traditional pedagogy
He believed that students is not an empty vessel to be filled with knowledge but students should be the creator of knowledge
Idealised a classroom where the teacher was not the leader or ‘dictator’ of knowledge, and rejected the idea that students were not capable of creating knowledge for themselves
Encouraged learner to think critically as independent learner beyond the classroom
Joe Ruhl, stated "Teachers should be a guide on the side, rather a sage on the stage"
Students decide which task they think best suited to knowledge gap
A) Behaviourism
Centers around the idea that the teacher should be in the control of the classroom.
Repetition is the best way to learn.
Operant conditioning forms the basis of behaviourism.
BF Skinner argued that teachers need complete control of the lesson for students to learn better.
he also found that student learns the right behaviour over time through immediate feedback
Repetition and reward is still the best basis for revision and having a reward system and teacher-led learning is the pillar for today's classroom.
D) Connectivism
one of the newest approach to pedagogy
Coined in 2005 by George Siemens
it considers the impact of the technology in education and how teachers can adapt to it
process of learning via technology and developing the skills to navigate vast networks of information such as the internet
teaching learners to be learners of digital age
learners can learn whenever they log in and once given the skills to navigate this world of information, they use it to develop their learning and learn autonomously
teacher facilitates students search the knowledge and how to extract it
