THE DISADVANTAGES OF TIME-OUT
Time-out does not address the underlying cause of the "inappropriate behavior."
Most undesirable behavior can be explained by one of three factors:
i) he child is attempting to fulfill a legitimate need
ii) he child lacks information or is too young to understand
iii) the child is feeling upset
What is TIME-OUT
replacement of physical punishment
An authoritarian approach
disciplinary tool
How?
children are separated from others in a designated period
children are to sit quietly on chair or sent to a room
children are expected to calm down, think and reflect on their behaviours
Makes our child angrier
They have pent up their anger that they are unable to think clearly about their actions
When they are given time out, they can express their true feelings.
This will only make they become furious.
Decreases our child's capacity to develop effective coping skills.
children will no longer have interest in doing something new in front of their parents or teachers
Ruptures relationship.
Children will start to avoid parents/teachers
Makes our child more selfish as they think less about their behavior, and more about how unfair the world is.
In teaching our children to suppress their tears, we may actually be increasing their susceptibility to a variety of emotional and physical imbalances
ignore the reason that underlie our child's behaviour
For example, siblings who are repeatedly separated and sent to their rooms when they fight may eventually learn to stop fighting in front of their parents.
Their unresolved feelings of jealousy and hatred, however, may come to expression in more devious ways, or they may carry their resentments into adulthood
Trigger the disobedience among the children
