Pathophysiology

The occurrence of cracks, fissures, or trauma allowing organisms to enter the moist nail crevice leads to bacteria or fungal colonization of the area
Causes

excessive exposure of the hands to moisture, including frequently sucking the finger

Nursing interventions
Assess the skin around the nails for colour, texture, elasticity, and moisture
Take note of the current medications, like corticosteroids and antineoplastic agents
Monitor the patient for any signs of swelling, purulent discharge and presence of pain
