Pathophysiology
The ovaries lose their ability to respond to the gonadotropins, mainly because most of the ovarian follicles and eggs have vanished through atresia.

The reason is that the decreased plasma oestrogen does not exert as much negative feedback on gonadotropin secretion. [ Orma M. 2012]
Definition
Permanent cessation of menstruation resulting from a loss of ovarian follicular activity. After 12 months of amenorrhea with no other attributable causes.
Around the age of 40 to 50 on the average menstrual cycle become less irregular and ovulation fails. There is also demination of female sex. [ Orma M. 2012]
