Definition
Onychorrhexis, also known as Brittle nails, is a brittleness with breakage of finger or toenails
It may result from excessive strong soap and water exposure, nail polish remover, hypothyroidism, anemia
Causes
Aging- Nails commonly changes as people age, often becoming dull and brittle
Cold of weather- During cold weather nail plate becomes dehydrated, resulting in peeling
Hypothyroidism- It may be caused by low thyroid levels
Clinical manifestations

Iron deficiency- It occurs when the body doesn`t get enough iron

Nails may have several splits that causes triangle tears on edges
Onychorrhexis involves the nail matrix, which is responsible for making the nail grow

Care plan
Apply moisturising products to the hand and nails
Avoid soaking or exposing your finger nails to water or cleaning chemicals
Eat food high in vitamins and minerals

Assist the patient in moisturising nails to strengthen the nails

Assist the patient in trimming broken or injured nails
