we use to talk about the past. But not of something that happened, but of something that could have happened, its consequences in a hypothetical future and if that past event

It refers to the past, but not to what actually happened, but to what could have happened and how that event would have had other consequences
first conditional
We use the first conditional to talk about situations that will occur if a particular condition occurs. This condition is not certain, but it is very likely.
the negative structure If + does not + present simple, will + verb in infinitive.
example
If Tomy doesn't hurry, he will miss the bus.

second conditional
It is used to talk about events that are unlikely to happen in the future. For situations that the speaker considers unlikely to happen in the future.
