Neurons
The basic building blocks of the nervous system, neurons are nerve cells that process and digestion messages through electrical and chemical signals.
Cell body: also called the soma, is the control centre of the neuron and includes the nucleus
-
Dendrites: receive signals from other neurons or from sensory receptor cells. the dendrites are typically connected to the cell body.
Axon: long slender fibre that carries impulses in the form of electrical signal known as action potential. the impulse travels down the axon to synapse.
-
Axon Terminal: connects the neuron to the other neurons )or directly to organs), using a process called synaptic transmission.
-
Motor Neuron
-
-
When stimulated, the motor neuron releases neurotransmitters that bind to the receptors on the muscle and trigger muscle movement
-
-
Sensory Neuron
-
-
-
When these impulses reach the brain, they are translated into sensations. However, not all sensory information travels as far as the brain
Some neurons terminate in the spinal cord which allows reflex actions to occur quickly without the delay of sending impulses to the brain
