Divisions of the Nervous System
Nervous System
Transmits impulses from one part fo the body to the other using individual nerve cells known as neurons
Two main functions: to collect, process and respond to information in the environment; to ordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body.
Central Nervous System
consists of the brain and spinal cord
Co-ordinate essential functions such as breathing, eating and heartbeat
Two main functions: control of behaviour and regulation of the body's physiological processes
The brain:
main job is to ensure life is maintained. some parts are primitive and concerned with vital functioning. Others are involved in higher order such as problem solving and planning.
The Spinal Cord:
Transfer electrical impulses between the brain and the PNS. This allows the brain to monitor and regulate bodily processes such as digestion and breathing. Contains circuits of nerve cells that enable us to perform simple reflexes without the involvement in the brain.
Peripheral Nervous System
Sends information to the CNS from the outside world and transmits messages frpm the CNS to muscles and glads in the body.
Subdivides into the Autonomic Nervous System and the Somatic Nervous System
Somatic Nervous System
Transmits information from receptor cells in the sense organs to the CNS. It also receives information from the CNS that directs muscles to act.
Receives impulses from the senses e.g. eyes and eyes.
Voluntary
Autonomic Nervous System
Responsible for your unconscious bodily functions. it is divided into two system: sympathetic and parasympathetic system.
Responsible for your unconscious bodily functions e.g., breathing and digestion. It transmits and receives impulses from the organs and is divided into two systems.
Unvoluntary
Sympathetic Nervous System:
Coordinates organs when in situations that need the individual to be aroused and expand energy when our muscles need energy and oxygen. Signals our heart and lungs to work harder and our liver to release glucose. Dilates pupils and directs blood to muscles.
Parasympathetic Nervous System:
Co-ordinates our organs when we can relax and conserve energy. It promotes digestion and slows our heart and breathing. Stimulates saliva, stimulates food processing, directs blood away from muscles.
